Bespoke pixel ceiling and high-end d&b audiotechnik audio for an exclusive London club.

Piranha: London

This case study explores how the Middlesex Sound & Lighting team delivered a fully immersive audio and lighting environment for Piranha, an exclusive London club, combining a high-end d&b audiotechnik sound system with a custom-manufactured pixel ceiling, all while respecting the acoustic responsibilities of a sensitive central London location.

About Piranha

Piranha is an exclusive London club created by two young entrepreneurs with a clear ambition: to build a genuinely high-end, premium nightlife space that stood apart from anything else in the area. The brief was about more than sound and light. It was about creating an immersive, signature environment that guests would remember and that reflected the calibre of the venue.

MSL was introduced to the project through a specialist project management team, a relationship that has since grown into an ongoing partnership across multiple projects, built on the strength of what was delivered here.

The Project

MSL was tasked with delivering a complete, high-end audio and lighting package for the club, designed around immersion, energy and a distinctive visual identity.

On the audio side, the goal was a premium, multi-zone system that filled the space with energy wherever guests moved through it. On the lighting side, the client wanted something genuinely bespoke, a signature feature that would define the look of the venue rather than a standard, catalogue nightclub install. The control approach also needed to suit a professional environment, giving experienced operators the depth they needed while keeping the system protected and reliable.

The Challenges

Delivering a club of this ambition in central London came with several distinct challenges:

  • Acoustic responsibility: with neighbouring residential properties nearby and offices in the building above, sound output had to be carefully controlled, particularly during the day. The system was designed with limiting in place so the venue could deliver impact in the evening while remaining a considerate neighbour.
  • A signature visual identity: the client did not want an off-the-shelf nightclub look. The lighting needed to become a defining feature of the space, which meant designing and commissioning something bespoke.
  • Winning confidence in the audio: the owners’ existing club ran a Funktion-One system, which can be harsh in the wrong space and was not the right fit for this environment. Rather than simply specifying an alternative, MSL arranged for the client to experience the proposed system first-hand.
  • Operator-level control: as a serious club environment with professional DJ and lighting operators, the system needed real flexibility and depth, without exposing critical infrastructure to accidental error.

The Solution

MSL delivered a fully integrated audio and lighting environment, combining premium sound with a one-of-a-kind ceiling feature.

For the audio, MSL specified a high-end d&b audiotechnik system. To bring the client on board, the team arranged an on-site demonstration at one of d&b’s existing installations, where the owners where given the chance to experience the difference in sound quality the brand could offer. The final design uses a large number of compact loudspeakers paired with multiple subwoofers, distributed across multiple zones so that energy and immersion follow the guest wherever they go in the venue, all delivered with the clarity and quality d&b is known for.

The headline feature, however, is the lighting. MSL designed and commissioned a fully bespoke pixel ceiling, built around custom pixel tower fixtures that were painted and manufactured to specification, combined with pixel strips running across the ceiling. Fully programmable, the ceiling comes alive with movement, sweeping waves of colour and high-impact effects, transforming the atmosphere throughout the night. Lasers and additional effects complete the immersive, high-energy environment.

Control is handled via an iPad-based system, with output deliberately limited to respect the venue’s neighbours. The wider control approach is more sophisticated than a typical hospitality install, designed to suit professional operators and the venue’s DJ and lighting setup.

Training and Support

Because Piranha operates as a specialised club environment, the control philosophy is built for experienced operators rather than general hospitality staff. MSL handled the full programming of the system and continues to provide ongoing maintenance, including remote support, so adjustments and updates can be made without unnecessary downtime.

The result is a true working partnership, with MSL on hand to keep both the audio and the lighting performing exactly as intended.
