The Project
The requirement was clear and consistent across sites: deliver great background audio that enhances the dining atmosphere without dominating it, and make the system genuinely simple to operate. Day-to-day control falls to front-of-house teams with no technical background, so ease of use was just as important as sound quality.
From an installation perspective, the systems needed to be straightforward to scale and replicate across a range of restaurant layouts and locations, while accommodating the specific requirements of individual sites.
The Challenges
As a multi-site rollout, the main challenges were about consistency and simplicity rather than architectural complexity:
- Consistency across locations: each restaurant has its own layout, so speaker placement had to be planned carefully to deliver the same even coverage and atmosphere from site to site.
- Ease of operation: with a high turnover of front-of-house staff, the systems had to be effectively foolproof, with intuitive local control and no need for technical training.
- Noise compliance where required: some venues have specific noise stipulations, which meant introducing sound limiting and a more programmable, controlled solution at those sites to stay compliant.
- Discreet installation: maintaining the clean look of each restaurant meant keeping speakers and cabling as unobtrusive as possible.
The Solution
Across the estate, MSL standardised on a distributed audio approach: a larger number of compact Martin Audio loudspeakers positioned around each venue to deliver smooth, even coverage at comfortable levels, rather than relying on a few high-output sources. This keeps the atmosphere consistent throughout the space and avoids hotspots.
Control is kept deliberately simple. A straightforward multi-zone mixer and standard amplification handle the core system, with localised volume controls positioned near each zone so staff can make quick adjustments from wherever they are working, rather than from a single fixed point. For sites with noise stipulations, the system is upgraded to a programmable solution with sound limiting built in, protecting both compliance and the neighbouring environment while still delivering great sound inside.
This combination of compact distributed speakers and simple, local control gives every Giggling Squid the same dependable result: clear, even, atmosphere-enhancing audio that any team member can manage with confidence.
